Sgraffito Plate
Since the sgraffito plate design is a very difficult design to make by hand, we used a mold and put a big slab over the mold, in order to create the shape we wanted for our plates. I decided to use the small square mold, and I really liked the outcome. Before doing our actual sgraffito plate, we made a test tile. For the test tile, we put a little bit of the design we wanted, and carved it out. This really helped me visualize what the real thing would look like.
A successful sgrafito is even on the sides, smoothed out, and has a neat design. This is difficult to accomplish, but when done, it looks great.
Inspiration
For my inspiration, I decided to use a mandala design. There are so many designs out there, and each one is very detailed with unique designs within it. I decided to use the one shown below. This image uses a balanced amount of black and white, and looks beautiful.
